What Happens to Extra Diabetic Supplies You No Longer Need?

· 4 min read

Almost everyone who has managed diabetes for a while has a drawer, a shoebox or a closet shelf holding supplies that no longer fit their routine. Doing nothing is the default, but it is rarely the best outcome — expiration dates keep moving.

Keep a reasonable backup

Before anything else, set aside what you might genuinely need. A sensible backup supply is worth more than whatever anyone would pay for it.

Donate what you can

Some local organizations and mutual aid groups accept sealed, unexpired supplies. Rules vary, so ask before assuming a donation will be accepted.

Dispose of what is unusable

Opened, expired or damaged items should be disposed of properly. Sharps in particular need appropriate handling — check your county's guidance.

Sell what is still sealed and dated

Anything that is sealed, unexpired and truly surplus can be sold. Locally in Louisville, that means submitting your details, bringing the items to our office, and being paid the same visit.

Bluegrass Buybacks is a buyback business, not a medical provider. Nothing here is medical advice — talk to your care team about anything related to your treatment.
